I've got a 2004 1.9 TDi.

This afternoon a new problem started, when accelerating there is a loud air noise (like a high flow hair dryer being turned on) and with poor vehicle acceleration, engine accels but a bit rough and with hesitation. The van can get up to 60 - 80 km/h but it's slow going, and it's bucking a bit as it goes thru gears. As soon as we back off on the pedal the air noise stops.

I’m guessing it’s an issue with the waist gate on the turbo. Remember T/S a similar problem on a turbocharged continental in A&P school way too many years ago.

It's a company car so it will go to one of the local Ford dealer shops tomorrow, but the Ford shops here in Toulouse do not inspire great confidence.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

how about a split in the ducting after MAF - whoosh of air being sucked in - lean mixture giving poor acceleration

Loss of power combined with an increase in induction noises are classic symptoms of air intake problems.

I presume the TDi's are all intercooled, so look at the air intake pipes between the airbox, intercooler and turbo. See if any have split, collapsed or fell off!

This is definitely not a MAF problem - if it was, there would be no increase in noise. What you have is a split or, more likely, a detached charge air pipe / hose. The charge air pipes / hoses are the large ones between the turbo and intercooler, and between the intercooler and intake manifold. I had one pop off last year, and the symptoms were similar to yours - the cause was the spanner monkeys at the local main agents not re-assembling them correctly after replacing a couple of coolant hoses damaged by them not having installed the fuel filter correctly. Once I had reassembled everything correctly (no new parts were required), everything was fine.

check the intake piping beyond the airbox, i left the clip off mine when i was fiddling with the MAF and it popped off causing exact symptoms you are experiencing.

Could have come off or may have split.
